Galway's Emergency Water Supply Contaminated

An emergency tap, set up following the find of lead contaminants in the areas water has itself been found to contain lead, four times above the acceptable level.

Water tankers have now been brought in to supply homes in the area following the find, which has badly embarrassed the city council.

The news comes as a litany of local authorities are now in contact the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) lead levels in 23 public water supplies have been detected as being above the acceptable rate.

So far, four public health notices have been issued by the EPA in the Old Mervue in Galway, Ballintra in Co Donegal, Bruff in Co Limerick, and Mallow in Co Cork while residents in Mallow, in Cork have been told their water has over treble the safe amount of lead in their supplies.

The EPA is now expected to meet with the Health Service Executive over the coming days to establish the true extent of the problem.

Follow up tests are now underway by the EPA, however there is some concern that while further testing carries on, dealing with the problem is taking an excessively long time. The EPA have known of the possibility of lead contamination since 2005, when they published a report on Galway's water supply.
