Taxi Fares To Increase In Novemeber
Taxi drivers are in for an early Christmas bonus this year, as the body that sets fares has decided to award an increase this November.
Following a lengthy consultation process by the Commission for Taxi Regulation, fares and many of the additional charges are set for a significant increase.
The details of the deal revealed on Tuesday shows there will be an increase in the standard and premium initial charges and tariffs of 8.3%, which will mean the initial fee for hiring a taxi will rise to €4.10 between 8.00am and 8.00pm with a premium rate of €4.45 at other times, on Sundays and during public holidays.
There will also be an increase in the charge for soiling a taxi, from €125 to €140.
The fare revision follows a public consultation between industry representatives, the Advisory Council, and Economic Consultants.
The Commission said the changes reflect the increased costs of owning and operating a taxi since the National Maximum Taxi Fare was brought in during September 2006.
The increase has been anticipated for some weeks, following the results of a consultant review to the commission, which recommended an 8.3% increase.
However, some taxi drivers are more concerned with the amount of taxi drivers being granted licenses by the regulator.
One driver writing on a website, IrishTaxi.net said: "I think most taxi drivers would prefer they added no increase to the fares and instead stopped the incessant increase in the number of Taxi licences being issued combined with proper enforcement. Still it’s better than nothing I suppose."
Commissioner for Taxi Regulation, Kathleen Doyle said: "The new fare has been set with due consideration for both taxi drivers and consumers.
"It is important that drivers have sufficient reward for their work, whilst a balance must be struck to ensure that the service remains affordable and demand is sustained."
All taxis will be displaying new in-vehicle information cards and sun visor stickers prior to the 1st of November with details of the change.
