Fianna Fail's Northern Ambitions On Hold
After serious considerations last year, Fianna Fail has indefinitely halted its plans to organise in the North.
As the party prepared to enter its Annual Conference in Limerick, the plans to enter into Northern Ireland politics have been taken 'off the agenda'.
Instead, the Party will discuss next year's local and European elections, and the ongoing decline in the Irish economy.
The Northern Ireland question of eventually contesting elections there, dominated last year's meeting of the Fianna Fáil parliamentary party in Co Wicklow with Minister for Justice Dermot Ahern charged with organising a committee to investigate the matter further.
However, the issue has sunk from the agenda list in light of the many prevailing issues such as the economy, Lisbon and the departure of Bertie Ahern.
Last year, announcing the plan, Bertie Ahern said: "Today I am announcing that Fianna Fáil, the Republican Party, will now move to develop a strategy for organising on a 32-county basis."
This 'Northern Strategy Committee' was supposed to engage in a public consultation exercise throughout the island of Ireland inviting submissions on its cross-border expansion.
Last October, a "timetable for cross-border expansion" and a "32-county strategy" were said to top the Minister's agenda.
However, the proposal was met with immediate difficulties with the status of the SDLP, who have long been viewed as the representatives of Fianna Fail in the North.
Presently only Sinn Fein (and the Green Party) organises on an all Ireland basis.

Fianna Fail (FF) has decided that they will not back independent candidates in the presidential election. It follows a row in Fianna Fáil over the party's presidential election strategy. Party Leader Micheal Martin put forward the motion, which was seconded by his Deputy Éamon Ó Cuív.
