Bogied Robbers Bungle Raid On Golf Club

Three men have been arrested by gardaí after they took over an hour trying to break into a golf club in Swords.

The three men, Thomas Freeman, 53, Stephen Freeman, 21, and Paul O'Shea, 22, were arrested by gardai leaving the Island Golf Club in Donabate after gardai received confidential information on their plans.

A gardaí surveillance team watched the premises following the tip off, as the hapless threesome landed themselves in the rough, and struggling to get entry into the Donabate golf club.

The men appeared at Swords District Court, and pleaded guilty to the entering the building with the intent to commit a crime in June last year.

The court heard all three men had previous convictions, while O'Shea, of Sillogue Avenue, Ballymun, is serving a three-year sentence.

The court was told O'Shea was addicted to drugs at the time, but is now off them and is training to be a fitness instructor upon release from prison.

Widower Thomas Freeman, of Sillogue Road, Ballymun, is an out-of-work bricklayer who cares for his daughter, son and granddaughter.

Stephen Freeman, also of Sillogue Road, Ballymun, lives with his mother and started getting into trouble after difficulties arose at home.

Judge John Lindsay sentenced Stephen Freeman to 200 hours of community service in lieu of two months in prison.

The judge sentenced O'Shea and Thomas Freeman to two months in prison.
