Car Sales Figures Down 40% On 2007

The number of new cars sold in Ireland last month has taken a worrying dip since the same month last year.

Figures from the Society of the Irish Motor Industry (SIMI) show a 40% drop compared to August 2007 with over 5,200 new cars sold last month, compared to almost 9,000 in August of last year.

SIMI Director General Alan Nolan has said the weak state of the economy is the main reason for the decrease, but remains confident the industry will survive: "The indicators for car sales in the longer run would be strong so long as we have big numbers employed and low numbers of cars per head of population as we have compared with the developed countries," he said.

July sales were up on last years figures with 3,236 more cars sold than in July 2007, although there remains a drop of 25,334 new car sales for the first seven months compared to last year.

Dealers blame a mix of high used-car stock levels and low margins on new cars as the key reasons why their businesses are coming under pressure.
