Kerry Suffers Water Contamination After Landslide

A major landslide in Co Kerry has left thousands of Co Kerry residents without clean water.

The area's Council has issued a boil water notice over fears the water could be unsafe to drink, affecting almost 5,000 people.

Following the landslide, large volumes of liquefied peat entered the main water supply for the area from the rivers Smearlagh and Feale.

The mudslide, which is a result of the recent flooding, is also feared to have devastating consequences for fish stocks, according to the Shannon Regional Fisheries Board.

Water tankers would be provided in this area, details of which would be announced later.

The recent water problems compounds ongoing difficulties with Kerry's water supply. Last month, Kerry County Council's regular testing programme revealed slightly elevated levels of naturally occurring arsenic in the Rossdohan Group Water Supply.

The arsenic detected was thought to be naturally occurring, coming from the bedrock in the ground, and the Council advised people using private wells to have their drinking water tested as a precautionary measure.

However, the HSE has advised that at the levels found, adverse health effects were unlikely.
