Third Irish Boxer Adds To Medal Tally

Another Irish Boxer is guaranteed a medal after winning his quarter final fight in Beijing.

The Workers' Gymnasium in Beijing has witnessed another Irish victory taking the Irish Olympic boxing team's medal total to at least three bronze awards.

The strong middleweight, Darren Sutherland, 26, defeated previous world silver medallist Alfonso Blanco Parra of Venezuela.

Sutherland made it a clean sweep of winning all four rounds by landing two unanswered blows to take the round 2-0 and the contest 11-1.

Sutherland, who has fought his way back from a serious eye injury that almost ended his career two years ago, will now fight Britain's James Degale on Friday morning.

He joins Paddy Barnes and Kenny Egan in the semi final stage. Both Egan and Sutherland face British opponents, while Belfast-born Barnes is pitted against the Chinese world champion.

All three bouts take place on Friday morning, with each fighter guaranteed a medal - Ireland is yet to win an Olympic medal of any distinction.
