Flash Floods Limerick And Cork

The River Arra in Newcastle West, Limerick, burst its banks on Thursday night after heavy rains, leaving over 3,000 households without electricity.

The flooding has left the local ESB station submerged in water and many without heating or light.

Around 7,000 ESB customers lost power as a result, but most have been reconnected and engineers are working to restore normal services to the others.

A Coast Guard helicopter was dispatched to the area when an elderly couple abandoned their home. They were found nearby by the helicopter crew.

The woman had to be winched to safety by the helicopter and was taken to the Midwest Regional Hospital to be treated for hypothermia and is reported to be in a stable condition.

Meanwhile, several towns in north Cork have also been affected by flash floods, with a number of motorists getting caught in the floods in Millstreet, Kanturk, Mallow and Charleville.

Motorists have been told to avoid the area as the N21 road through the town remained impassable.

A clean-up operation has now begun as the water level starts to recede.
