3,000 Arrests Fail To Make It To Court

Lack of evidence has meant almost 3,000 criminal cases did not make it to the courts last year.

Figures released by the office of the Director of Public Prosecutions reveal almost 10,000 cases were concluded, but in around 3,500 of these, a decision was taken not to go ahead with a prosecution. In the vast majority of cases, the reason for the decision was insufficient evidence.

In this latest report from the office of the Director of Public Prosecutions, Director James Hamilton reveals the amount of cases coming to his office has risen by 2% on the previous year with just over 15,500 files coming in from the gardaí.

The report also shows most convictions for offences coming before the circuit and central criminal courts are secured after a guilty plea from the accused rather than a verdict from a jury.
