Lisbon Cuts Summer Short For Daíl

Following the visit of the French President, the Taoiseach is reportedly recalling the Daíl in order to try and solve problems following the Lisbon Treaty fiasco.

The Government had first controversially announced an early summer break to the outrage of Daíl opposition leaders, and now the recall in the shadow of Nicolas Sarkozy's visit is sure to stir fears by the anti Lisbon parties that another referendum could be timetabled.

In early September, Brian Cowen will face tough questions at the EU summit in Brussels, were he will be expected to provide a solution to the Lisbon tumult.

The Daíl will have to formally agree on the plan of action chosen by the government, and the six weeks early return will be used as a run up for what is likely to be a tough debate.

The recall is reportedly scheduled for Wednesday, September 3.
