1,000 Schools in Need of 'Critical Repair'

A freedom of information request by Fine Gael has revealed over 60% of Irish schools are in need of critical repairs, according to the opposition party.

Fine Gael Education Spokesman Brian Hayes revealed the findings on Tuesday, which contain a list of all schools requiring building works.

Mr Hates said the information showed 25% of all schools in the country, both primary and post-primary, now have a building application before the Department and In many cases the applications date back over ten or 15 years.

"Effectively schools are stuck on a list going nowhere as the commitments made in the National Development Plan have been put to one side," he said.

The Minister added: "What is more worrying is the fact that of the 1,400 applications, more then 1,000 have been described by the Department as critical or in need of urgent repair.

"I have asked the Department to reveal the cost of the entire programme to build and to set out the costs involved by the schools individually in bringing their applications to the stage they are at.

"Yet they cannot tell me this information, which seems extraordinary."

However, last week Pat the Cope Gallagher confirmed that Batt O’Keefe, Minister for Education and Science approved grant aid for the provision of temporary accommodation at two Finn Valley Schools.

Mr Gallagher emphasised this was only temporary accommodation and confirmed he requested Minister O'Keefe to give the necessary approval for the commencement of construction of the new Finn Valley College on the Greenfield site at Drumboe .
