Garda Association Slams Social Workers
A top garda association has criticised the Health Service Executive (HSE) after a young boy was forced to spend the night in a Garda station.
The boy who was described as "very vulnerable" by garda, was found by officers who were unable to contact HSE social workers on emergency contact numbers, leaving the boy stranded at the Mallow station in Cork.
The incident is the latest in a series involving vulnerable minors highlighted by the Association of Garda Sergeants and Inspectors. A similar incident was reported earlier this month at Coolock in Dublin.
The case has prompted Children's Ombudsman, Emily Logan, into taking action to ensure the provision of countrywide out-of-hours social worker services to care for at-risk children.
Minister for Children Barry Andrews described the incident as "wholly unacceptable" despite admitting out of hours social services varied county to county.
AGSI national executive member Willie Gleeson said: "Gardai are not trained to deal with children on this basis and garda stations are a totally unsuitable environment for dealing with them."
Gardai are now pressing for a formal review by Ms Logan's office and have formally raised the issue with the Department of Health, and a number of other bodies.
