Irish Politicians To Volunteer Overseas

A group of Irish politicians are to spend part of the summer on volunteer work overseas.

Voluntary Service Overseas (VSO) has invited the politicians to undertake voluntary work in the shape of helping to advise community organisations on how to influence government and policy-making processes.

Project PolVol will also see British MPs spending two to three weeks overseas, in 10 countries, joining 1,500 volunteers currently overseas.

Judith Brodie, Director of VSO UK said: "Our partners will be making use of the MPs' valuable skills and knowledge in lobbying and influencing policy. The MPs will be working with disadvantaged people in some of the poorest countries in the world, helping them to get their voices heard by decision-makers. We hope their VSO experience will provide the MPs with a unique and valuable insight into development issues which will inform their work back in parliament."

TDs Sean Sherlock, Leo Varandkar and Chris Andrews as well as Senators Mark Daly and Dominic Hannigan are among the Irish politicians who will be visiting some of the poorest countries in the world.

VSO is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year. Over 32,000 people have volunteered with the charity.

The first serving MP to volunteer with VSO was Gillilan Merron in 2005 when she spent five weeks working with the Guyana Teachers' Union.
