Crime Spree Teen Awaits Sentence
A Balbriggan teenager who indulged in a rampant crime spree throughout Dublin is awaiting sentence.
The 17-year-old youth who cannot be named for legal reasons accrued a litany of offences including attacking an elderly man with a hammer, assaulting a 19 year-old girl, numerous robberies, attacking a group of Austrian tourists, and breaking a garda's nose.
The boy, along with an accomplice, broke into a 78-year-man's home and hit him with a hammer when they learned he didn't have any money.
The court heard that a group of Austrian tourists were on a train back to Dublin on September last, after visiting Newgrange when the teenager and an accomplice approached them and told them to empty their pockets.
When they refused the boy's accomplice punched one of the group. One of the tourists hit him back but was beaten up by the two youths who then took his iPod and €270.
The teen also told a 19-year-old girl to "shut the f*ck up" after chasing her down and pushing her over before ripping the girls iPod from around her neck. The girl broke her collarbone during the fall.
Following this incident, the boy was taken into custody in Balbriggan. A Garda officer went to his cell to wake him up to meet his father when he suddenly head butted the garda and broke his nose, teeth and punched him three times.
Defence counsel, Mr Luigi Rea BL, was told by garda that the youth admitted his guilt after his arrest for each offence and said he was sorry.
The sergeant said it was usual for the 'teen to offer the excuse that he was "off his head" on drink and drugs.
He said he had 15 previous convictions including burglary, threatening behaviour and escape from custody.
Sentencing will take place next week.
