Government's New Broadband Plan
Better broadband access across Ireland is on its way, after the government announced a new ten-point plan for technical infrastructure.
Backed by the Irish Internet Associated, the next generation broadband strategy will target physical infrastructure, according to Communications Minister Eamon Ryan.
The ten-step plan will set goals for desired access and research.
The Irish Internet Association has, also welcomed the government's offers to provide 100-megabyte speed broadband access to all secondary schools, for education purposes.
It is expected this will be done on a phased basis.
The Association's Chief Executive Fergal O'Byrne said, although his organisation recognised the government had taken a major step, effort still needed to be made to make broadband access more affordable.
The Irish government's move comes after the Northern Ireland devolved assembly announced an investment plan to improve internet access in rural areas.
Residents in Drumsurn have been connected to a test-bed wireless network, a trial project offering a variety of internet speeds.
Economy Minister Arlene Foster commissioned local telecommunications company North West Electronics to provide a trial wireless broadband service to the village.
