Garda Taking Flat Approach To Speeding
Kildare County Council have taken a two-dimensional approach to tackling speeding in the state by putting a life size cut-out of a garda car on roadsides throughout the county.
Garda showed they are definitely cut-out to dealing with the speeding problem in the area when they left their first dummy patrol car cut-out in place on Saturday morning on the N78 at Fontstown, between Athy and Kilcullen.
Kildare's Road Safety Officer Declan Keogh says "the car is a heavy robust wood cut-out and is not cardboard by any means".
He said that the location of the mock garda car was considered with effectiveness in mind, but safety was of utmost importance.
From a distance motorists hopefully react by slowing down when they see what they believe to be a garda vehicle.
Responding to queries as to why the garda car was facing inwards, rather than outwards, Mr Keogh says regardless of which way the vehicle is facing, or the direction the garda is pointing the speed detector in, its main objective to deter drivers from speeding is in fact working.
The car will be placed at various locations throughout Co Kildare at varied times and no notice will be given to the public on the placements.

Over 660 Motorists Found Speeding Over Easter Bank Holidays
More than 660 motorists were caught breaking the speed limit across the Causeway Coast and Glens during the Easter bank holiday weekend – an increase of 22% from 2022. Justice And Equality Budget To Increase By €85m
The budget for the Justice and Equality sector is to be increased by €85 million, totalling €2.54 billion in 2017. Funding has been provided for the recruitment of 800 Garda recruits in 2017 and up to 500 civilians to support the wide ranging reform plan in train in An Garda Síochána. A total of €71.

Taoiseach Makes Garda Commitments Following O'Higgins Report Publication
The Taoiseach Enda Kenny has committed to increase garda numbers to 15,000, double the number of garda reserve officers and increase the number of civilian workers in An Garda Síochána to free up officers for frontline policing. The Taoiseach made his comments in a statement addressing the newly published O'Higgins Commission Report.
