Irish Troops Enlisting In British Army

The number of Irish soldiers enlisting in the British Army has doubled in the past year.

One in every 10 recruits signing up for the British army in Northern Ireland is now reportedly from the Republic, and it is understood that about 600 are recruited annually.

The British Army has indicated that 10.5% of enlistments in Northern Ireland were from the South - a figure that has more than doubled from 4.5% the previous year.

During the Troubles there were up to 30,000 British troops in Northern Ireland, but troop levels have now fallen to only 3,000.

The rate of southern recruits is reportedly due to economic conditions and a shift in attitudes towards a career in the British army.

Also, many hopeful Irish recruits rejected by the Irish army attempt to then get enlisted in the British forces as another route into the career.
