Elderly Couple Killed In Road Collision

An elderly couple have been killed after a road traffic collision in Co Limerick.

The two deaths bring the number of fatalities on the nation's roads to 129 for this year alone.

The crash took place at 1.30pm near a filling station at Coolanoran, between Newcastle West and Rathkeale on the main Limerick to Kerry road.

The couple, in their 70s, were travelling out from Limerick when their silver Citroen crashed into a black Lexus coming in the opposite direction at lunchtime yesterday.

Two women travelling in the Lexus were hospitalised following the crash but their injuries were apparently not life-threatening.

The elderly couple are from the west Limerick area but gardaí said their names would not be released until family members had been informed.

Garda have asked for anyone who may have witnessed the accident to contact them.

Limerick Tunnel Opens
Taoiseach Brian Cowen will open the long awaited Limerick Tunnel today at 1pm. The route now cuts under the River Shannon and links Coonagh on the northern bank with Bunlicky on the southern bank. There are two toll plazas located on the north side of the river and it will cost €1.

Man Killed In Co Limerick Road Crash
A man in his 20s has died following in a road traffic collision in Co Limerick. The crash occurred shortly after 2am on the R511, Fedamore - Limerick Road at Carnane on Tuesday, 04 October. The victim was killed when the car he was travelling in as a passenger left the road and struck a ditch. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Man Killed In Co Limerick Road Crash
Gardaí have reported the death of a 25-year-old man in a single-vehicle road crash in Co Limerick. The man died after the car he was driving collided with a pole at Ballyphillip in Banogue, on the N20 shortly before midnight.

Two Killed In Co. Limerick Road Crash
Two people have died following a road crash in Co. Limerick on Thursday. The driver and passenger in the car, a 60 year-old man and a 59 year-old woman, were both killed in the incident, which happened between Limerick and Mitchelstown. Their car collided with a truck in Ballylanders on the road at around 12.20pm on Thursday afternoon.

Coroner Calls For Official Record Of Suicide Verdicts
Inquest verdicts of suicide should be officially recorded to help gather real statistics, the coroner for west Limerick has said. Currently, a coroner can only recommend a verdict of death in accordance with the medial evidence as given by a pathologist, west Limerick coroner and Senior Counsel Brendan Nix added.
