Cowen Convinces Farmers Of Yes Vote

Threats of a No vote recommendation by the Irish Farmer’s Association are expected to diminish following assurances of protection by the Government.

The leadership of the Irish Farmer's Association is expected to recommend a 'yes' vote in the upcoming Lisbon Treaty referendum after Brian Cowen contacted the organisation to say he would use Ireland's veto if ongoing discussions bore an unacceptable trade deal from the World Trade Organisation.

The IFA has been threatening to call for a 'no' vote in protest at the EU's apparent willingness to make major concessions on agriculture at the world trade talks.

It said it would only support the referendum if the Government promised to veto any WTO deal that was not good for Irish farmers.

The news follows a decision by the Irish Creamery Milk Suppliers Association, the country's second-largest farming organisation, to recommend a 'Yes' vote after a meeting in Tullamore County Offaly this morning with the Taoiseach.

Brian Cowen assured them also the Government will not accept a WTO deal that is unbalanced and undermines farmers.
