Shock Tactics To Be Used On Smokers

The Department of Health has announced it is to print shocking images showing the health consequences of smoking on cigarette packets.

It was confirmed this week thast the pictures will be used in conjunction with text warning about the potentially deadly impact of the habit, the Department of Health confirmed yesterday.

One of the graphic pictures shows a man with an advanced cancerous tumour on his throat while another shows the damage which years of smoking inflicts on healthy lungs.

The public have been invited to make submissions on 14 colour photographs for tobacco packaging.

The proposal has been put forward by the Minister for Health and Children, Ms. Mary Harney T.D., who is to introduce the legislation to allow for the introduction of combined text and photo warnings on tobacco products.

A disturbing image of a baby wearing a breathing apparatus and another of badly decayed teeth are also being considered.

The images can be viewed on the Department of Health website at www.dohc.ie.
