Referendum Commision To Spend €5 million On Lisbon Campaign

An independent public information campaign on the Lisbon Treaty has been launched in Dublin.

The Referendum Commission has begun distributing over two million copies of its hand-book explaining the Lisbon Treaty to homes around the country as part of a campaign expected to cost €5 million.

More than 20 different types of ads will run on billboards, in newspapers, on radio and TV, and on public transport.

The Commission is also targeting young voters by explaining the Lisbon Treaty through on-line social networking sites such as Bebo, Facebook and Youtube.

The Taoiseach, Brian Cowen, who has taken a strong stance against the 'No' campaigners, has supported the independent drive by the commission.

Mr Cowen said: "When people ask the question 'why do we need yet another European referendum?' the answer is quite simple - it is because the challenges faced by the EU and its members change all the time and we need the Union to be able to meet these challenges efficiently and effectively."

Mr Cowen also addressed recent criticism regarding the complexity of the document, which caused several high profile members of the public to rubbish the treaty.

"To suggest that you can only support something which is an easy read is absurd and any such treaty would contain many potential problems.

"What is important is not the complexity of the document but that independent and accessible information be available on exactly what the provisions of the Treaty mean," he said.

On Monday, The Taoiseach and Fianna Fáil Ministers took to a 'battle bus' in a bid to secure a yes vote for the Lisbon Treaty referendum.

By the end of the campaign Fianna Fáil claims it will have held 50 public meetings throughout the country.
