McAleese Appeals For Burma Aid

As Pesident Mary McAleese expressed her sympathies to the people of disaster-hit Burma, and insisted that Ireland is "anxious to assist in the relief and recovery effort", an 'umbrella' group for Irish aid agencies is seeking donations from the public to help the victims of last weekend's cyclone in Burma.

The Chief Executive of GOAL, an international humitarian organisation, is demanding that the Irish Government do all it can to pressure the Burmese authorities to allow aid workers into the country.

John O'Shea claims Burma's military government is blocking access for aid workers to cover up its brutal treatment of civilians.

He said the situation will not change unless political clout is brought to bear.

He explained that GOAL has responded to nearly every major natural and man-made disaster in the past 30 years, working with the poorest of the poor in 50 countries.
