Breakthrough Talks See Pharmacists Withdraw Threat
Pharmacists have withdrawn their threat to boycott community drugs schemes after a breakthrough in talks on Wednesday night.
Up to 900 pharmacies were threatening to stop dispensing medicine under various schemes due to a row over the payments they receive from the HSE for wholesale medicines.
The Irish Pharmacy Union (IPU) said it would recommend proposals from the Health Service Executive (HSE) aimed at ending the bitter row over the decision to cut wholesale payments for drugs, from 18% to 7%, from March.
The HSE had unilaterally slashed the price in an effort to save money leading to a huge dispute over the matter.
However, the deal reached yesterday will see pharmacists continue to dispense medicines to medical card holding customers and people on other drug schemes with whom they had threatened to stop trading.
Under the new deal, the HSE has agreed to continue paying the current price for fridge items like insulin and controlled drugs like morphine.

Investigation Into Church Care Inquiry Suspended
The Ombudsman for Children has suspended its investigation into a child protection audit of the Catholic Church by the HSE and the Department of Health. Ombudsman Emily Logan said on Wednesday she had suspended her investigation due to the failure by the HSE to "genuinely cooperate with the process".

Pharmacists Lodge 400 Actions At High Court
Over 400 Irish pharmacists have lodged high court actions against the government over plans to reduce the HSE's drugs bill. The chemists are seeking injunctions to stop the HSE making controversial changes to their fees for dispensing drugs, which would save the service up to €100 million a year.
