Teen Critical After Suffering Burns

A 13 year-old boy is in a critical condition in hospital having suffered serious burns from ignited petrol.

Ciaran Callanan's family claim he was repairing a quad bike with a group of other young people in the Gurranabraher area of Cork when petrol splashed on him.

They say he was engulfed in flames when he accidentally flicked a lighter that was in his pocket.

The boy was with a group of friends on wasteland at Mount St Joseph's Avenue on Bakers Road in Gurranabraher, Cork city, at 9.30pm on Sunday when the incident occurred.

The boy's godfather, Pat Murphy, yesterday rejected claims the youth had been involved in a petrol-sniffing incident.

The teenager was transferred from Cork University Hospital to the special burns unit of Our Lady's Hospital for Sick Children in Crumlin last night.

Ciaran was wearing a flammable nylon tracksuit at the time of the accident and sustained 42% burns to his body.

His condition was last night described as "critical".
