Survey Shows Only 5% Understand Lisbon Treaty
Research has been published showing that just 5% of voters understand what the Lisbon Treaty is about.
A sample of voters was asked earlier how well they understood the Treaty, and he results showed many of them did not. A huge 62% of respondents said they 'did not understand it all', 18% said they 'did not understand it particularly well', while only 15% said they understood it 'to some extent', leaving a mere 5% claiming they fully understood the crucial treaty.
Chairman of the Referendum Commission, Mr Justice Iarfhlaith O'Neill, said he acknowledged the Treaty 'was not exactly holiday reading', but he believed the document was no more complicated than the Finance Bill published every year.
Earlier this month, businessman Ulick McEvaddy added his support to the Libertas campaign for a No vote to the Lisbon Treaty. Speaking in Dublin he said he had read the Lisbon treaty four times and did not understand it. He added that the Irish people are being asked to vote for something in Europe that nobody understands.
The commission is currently printing a 14 page explanation of the treaty which will be sent to every voting household in the coming weeks.
