TD Demands For Rules On Court Involvement

The Green Party's leader has called for strict guidelines to govern politicians getting involved in court cases.

John Gormley was speaking in response to questions on the controversy surrounding Labour Party TD Kathleen Lynch.

Ms Lynch has been forced to apologise for writing a letter of reference on behalf of the family of a man convicted of raping two of his girlfriend's teenage sisters.

The Cork TD's letter testified to the good character of the convicted Mr Casey's parents, and was presented to Mr Justice Patrick McCarthy.

One of the victims said she was hurt by the letter and that Deputy Lynch should be ashamed of herself.

In a statement issued on Monday, the Labour deputy said she deeply regretted writing the letter if her actions added to the ordeal of the two victims.

She said she now accepts that it was inappropriate for a TD to become involved in a case of such seriousness.

Trevor Casey, whose parents are known to Ms Lynch, was subsequently jailed for 13 years.

Speaking today, Mr Gormley said he believed it was always inappropriate for TDs to get involved in the judicial process and he would like to discuss the matter with the Minister for Justice.
