Government Supports Landmine Clearance

The Government has announced it is donating €1.8m to support mine clearance work in Afghanistan, Angola and Somalia.

Minister for Overseas Development Michael Kitt said Irish Aid will give the money to a leading mine-clearance charity active in all three countries, the Halo Trust.

The €1.8 million will come from the Department of Foreign Affairs' Irish Aid fund which is set aside to help finance projects in developing countries.

Mr Kitt said the Halo Trust had achieved much "in protecting potential victims and returning land to safe, productive use".
