Whistleblower Service To Stop Gardaí Corruption

The Minister For Justice has announced plans for a so-called 'Whistleblower' service after allegations of police corruption came to light.

The Minister, Brian Lenihan has appointed Brian McCarthy to head up the service as Confidential Recipient.

Mr McCarthy retired last year from the post of Secretary General to the President and will be able to receive reports of corruption or malpractice within An Garda Síochána from Garda officers or civilian employees.

Minister Lenihan said "I am delighted to appoint Brian McCarthy to this new position. He is a man of the highest integrity and I wish him well in his new role.

“Our police service must operate to the highest standards and the implementation of this system is a further measure to help ensure that corruption or malpractice cannot exist within An Garda Síochána.”

The move comes in response to a proposal from the Morris Tribunal, which has been investigating corruption in the Donegal Gardaí.

The confidential and independent office is designed to ensure gardaí that their career prospects will not be harmed and they will not be intimidated if they raise concerns about the actions of their colleagues.
