Huge Rise In Personal Injuries Claims

Over €180m was paid out in 2007 for personal injuries claims - a huge rise on the previous figures.

In fact, the total amount of money paid out for compensation awards last year rose by 56%.

Figures from the Personal Injuries Assessment Board show that it made 8,200 payments totalling €181m.

However, it could have been a great deal more, as the Board says it delivered 'savings' of €40m by actively settling early and so keeping compensation claims out of the courts.

The average case was settled in just under seven months, compared to three years for cases that went through the courts system.
