Galway Man Loses Murder Conviction Appeal

A Galway man who was convicted of the murder of an 87 year-old-woman has lost his appeal.

Fifty-four year-old Michael Joseph Kelly was convicted of murdering Margaret Glynn in her home in Galway in 1981.

Mr Kelly pleaded not guilty but was sentenced to life imprisonment. He has always maintained his innocence and claims he was the victim of a miscarriage of justice.

A post mortem examination carried out at the time by the then State Pathologist John Harbison, found that Mrs Glynn died as a result of manual strangulation before a fire was started at her home.

The body of Ms Glynn's brother was also recovered from the fire but he was found to have died from natural causes.

Kelly, who worked for the brother and sister at the time, allegedly strangled Ms Glynn before setting fire to her bed.

He challenged the conviction on the grounds of scientific evidence he said raised doubts on the statement of confession.

However, the Court of Criminal Appeal today dismissed his challenge, stating its satisfaction that the confession was given freely and by Kelly alone.
