Former Fianna Fáil TD Dies

Former Fianna Fáil TD Hugh Gibbons has died at the age of 91.

Dr Gibbons served as a TD in Dáil Éireann for 12 years, from 1965-1977.

Gibbons, who worked as a medical doctor before entering the world of politics, was elected on his first attempt when he stood as a Fianna Fáil candidate in the Roscommon constituency in the 1965 general election.

Following constituency changes under the Electoral (Amendment) Act 1969, Dr Gibbons was re-elected at the 1969 general election in the new Roscommon-Leitrim constituency.

He was returned to the Dáil again at the 1973 election, but did not contest the 1977 general election and retired from politics.
