Breast Cancer Deaths Highlighted In Study

Ireland has one of the highest mortality rates from breast cancer in the western world, a new study has claimed.

The Health at a Glance 2007 study, by the Paris-based Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development, examined the state of health care in 30 countries including the EU, the US, Canada and Korea.

It found that 28% of women diagnosed with breast cancer in Ireland in 2004 died from the disease. Only two other countries - Hungary and Denmark - had higher rates.

The survey also found that Ireland was also one of the biggest consumers of alcohol and tobacco.

The report found that 27% of the population in Ireland smokes, while Ireland also had one of the highest rates of alcohol consumption in the survey, along with Hungary, France and the Czech Republic.

However, the report also found that health expenditure in Ireland was almost double that of the OECD average between 1995 and 2005.

The report also found that, between 1995 and 2005, Ireland and Korea increased spending on their healthcare systems more than any other countries surveyed in that period.
