Dublin Bus Dispute Escalates

Thousands of commuters in Dublin faced travel disruption today due to the ongoing Dublin Bus dispute.

More than 100 drivers were reported to be involved in an official picket at Harristown Bus depot in north Dublin on Monday morning.

A number of routes have been hit by the action, and the worst affected areas include Blanchardstown, Ballymun, Finglas and Swords.

The dispute was sparked because of drivers' opposition to new routes planned to start today - the 4A from Ballymun to Stradbrook and 128 from Clongriffin to Rathmines.

Dublin Bus wants drivers from Harristown depot to start, take breaks and terminate in the city centre rather than at the depot, but drivers want to be able to return to the depot for all starts, breaks and finishes.

It has also been reported that a female driver was suspended this morning after refusing to drive on one of the new routes.

Michael Faherty, General Secretary of the National Bus and Rail Union, warned that the dispute could spread to other areas and depots.

Dublin Bus has appealed to drivers picketing at Harristown to return to work.
