Refinery Protestors Arrested

Protestors who have been physically blocking access to a refinery site have been arrested this morning.

They were detained during sporadic scuffles that have been taking place at the Corrib Gas project refinery site at Bellanaboy in Co Mayo.

Gardaí removed protesters who had been sitting on the roadway attempting to block trucks bound for the works site.

Police said there have been a number of arrests.

Opponents of the project have been staging a demonstration near the site this morning.

About 200 supporters of the Shell to Sea campaign briefly delayed workers entering the site shortly before 7am.

A large force of gardaí has been keeping the road to the site open and they removed a number of demonstrators who had been standing in front of vehicles
