Light Bulb Row Sparks Suspensions

Around 20 electricians have been suspended by the Health Service Executive (HSE) in a dispute over who changes light bulbs.

The electricians from Cork University Hospital, St Finbarr's Hospital, Kerry General Hospital in Tralee and Mallow General Hospital in Cork were suspended on Tuesday evening.

The electricians are all members of the Technical Engineering and Electrical Union.

The dispute centres on work practice changes which the HSE wants to implement, but has become deadlocked over the issue of who is responsible for changing light bulbs and performing small-scale electrical tasks in hospitals.

The electricians said that these tasks are exclusively theirs, while the HSE claims that this adds considerably to its costs.

The HSE has also claimed that TEEU members are no longer providing an on call or out of hours service, except in life or death situations, to acute hospitals in the region.

It also stopped paying on-call allowances to those involved in the dispute for the last two weeks. The electricians have not insisted that they will only take instructions from their immediate maintenance supervisors and have refused to carry bleepers and answer pagers or mobile phones.

If the dispute continues, services will be compromised, the HSE warned. The TEEU condemned the suspension of the electricians, but said that it was available for talks.
