Man Gunned Down In Dublin

A 27-year-old man has been shot dead in Finglas in north Dublin.

Gardaí were called to Cloonlara Drive after the man was shot several times while sitting in a car, around 1.45am on Monday.

His body was taken to the Mater hospital where he was pronounced dead.

The scene of the shooting has been sealed off for technical examination and the State pathologist has been notified.

The dead man has not officially been identified, although reports have named the dead man as John Daly, who had recently completed a nine-year sentence for armed robbery.

Daly had caused considerable controversy earlier this year when he called RTE Radio's 'Liveline' programme from a mobile phone that had been smuggled into his cell in Portlaoise prison.

His phone and sim card were confiscated and he was transferred to Cork prison immediately following the incident.
