Meath Incinerator Expansion Approved
Expansion plans for the incinerator at Duleek in Co Meath have been given the go-ahead by An Bord Pleanála.
Indaver Ireland had applied to increase the Carranstown plant by one-third of its current capacity, in order to enable it to take 200,000 tonnes of waste each year, rather than the current total of 150,000.
The decision means that the plant will increase in size by a quarter and the height of the chimney stack will increase from 40m to 65m.
The decision, which has 31 conditions, also means that the plant will be able to accept waste from other northeast counties such as Louth, Cavan and Monaghan and could mean that waste from Dublin could also be incinerated at the plant, under the EU's "proximity principle".
An Bord Pleanála is also considering plans for an incinerator in Poolbeg in Dublin, which would be able to deal with over 700,000 tonnes of waste.

Ireland Must Generate Less Waste
Efforts to recycle are being undermined by the increasing amount of waste we produce, according to the Minister of State. Speaking at the Department of Environment, Heritage and Local Government, the Minister of State Tony Killeen said: “We should recycle and recover all our waste – but we must generate less waste to recycle”.

Three Inquiries Launched Into Oxigen Plant Fire
Three separate investigations have been launched into the Oxigen waste recycling plant fire. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the Fire Service and Gardaí will all conduct their own investigations into the cause of the fire, which began on Saturday morning. Minister for the Environment announced the inquiries in the Dáil.

Dublin City Council has been granted a licence to build its controversial waste incinerator at Poolbeg. The Environmental Protection Agency passed the licenece following weeks of discussions and opposition from environmental groups, residents groups and members of the Daíl.
