Long Day For Alzheimer's Carers

Many carers of Alzheimer's disease sufferers have to spend most of their day looking after their patients.

A report by the Alzheimer Society of Ireland found that 63% of carers spent more than an exhausting 14 hours a day looking after the person suffering from Alzheimer's.

The study also found that most carers did not believe that they had enough money to look after the person they were caring for - 56% said that they felt they did not have enough income to support the person they were looking after, while 48% said that they had had to pay for additional help.

The charity said that the research showed that improvements needed to be made in the support available to carers, including the availability of better dementia services in the community.

Alzheimer’s or dementia affects around 38,000 people in Ireland, the society said, although they warned that cases were expected to double over the next 20 years, due to population trends and longer life expectancy.
