Lough Corrib Infected By Zebra Mussels

Zebra mussels have infested Lough Corrib the largest lough in the Republic of Ireland.

According to the Western Regional Fisheries Board, the pest has infested a substantial area of the lake, in a section north of Oughterard.

Zebra mussels are native to eastern Europe. They grow best in areas of free-flowing water where they can filter out large quantities of plankton. Colonies of zebra mussels may also accumulate and clog water-intake pipes and screens of drinking water facilities, industrial facilities, power generating plants, cooling systems of boat engines and boat hulls.

The population multiplies quickly, as an adult female can produce between 30,000 and 100,000 eggs annually.

Earlier this year, large numbers of the protozoan parasite cryptosporidium were detected in water from the lake, which led to the contamination of the public water supply in Galway city and an outbreak of cryptosporidiosis, which causes diarrhea, stomach cramps and a low grade fever.
