Jobs To Be Announced For Athlone And Cork

Micheál Martin, Minister for Enterprise, Trade & Employment, is expected to announce the creation of 350 new jobs in Athlone and Cork today.

US medical technology company Kinetic Concepts Incorporated are setting up a base in Athlone and are believed to be planning to create 250 jobs in the area over the next five years, with the first 50 expected to be in place by the end of the year.

Meanwhile, Blizzard Entertainment, another US firm, is planning to establish a support centre in Cork.

The firm, which developed computer games such as World of Warcraft and Diablo, are planning to recruit 50 people initially, but plan to double that figure within three years.

Argos Hit By Day-Long Strike
Striking Argos workers have claimed the company flew in staff from the UK to man stores during a one-day strike at the weekend. Pickets were placed at the 18 Argos stores around the country in a work stoppage as part of a campaign for better pay. Stores in Dublin, Cork, Limerick, Kilkenny, Athlone and Drogheda were among those being picketed.

An Post Advises Customers Against Sending Mail
An Post has advised customers not to post any letters or parcels until further notice due to industrial action by workers. Staff at IO Systems maintain the sorting process in Dublin, Athlone, Cork and Portlaoise. However, a 14 day notice of industrial action had been issued by the Communications Workers' Union (CWU).
