Government Unveils €6 Million Arts Capital Investment Fund
The Minister for Culture, Communications and Sport, Patrick O'Donovan TD, has unveiled a pilot Arts Capital Investment Fund worth €6 million at the Mermaid Arts Centre in Bray, joined by Minister of State Noel Grealish TD. Applications open on 1 October 2026, delivering a Programme for Government commitment to develop a dedicated capital scheme for arts and culture facilities.
The fund will support arts and culture organisations nationwide to purchase equipment and carry out refurbishment works, including climate action measures, health and safety upgrades, and projects to ensure universal access. Community and voluntary groups will also be eligible for equipment grants to broaden participation in the arts.
Three strands are available for not-for-profit applicants: Category 1 for equipment for arts and culture organisations or multi-use centres providing or developing dedicated arts and culture facilities; Category 2 for construction works for arts and culture organisations or multi-use centres (including equipment where necessary); and Category 3 for equipment to boost participation by community and voluntary groups. The scheme will accept applications for 11 weeks, with organisations able to apply to one category only. Full eligibility details and guidance will be published on the Department's website from 1 October 2026.
Speaking at the launch, Minister O'Donovan said: "This €6 million fund is about much more than buildings and equipment - it is about opening doors to creativity and opportunity in communities across Ireland. "By investing in the places where culture happens, and in the community and voluntary groups that bring it to life, we are helping to ensure that arts can play an important part in people's lives, regardless of where you live or your background.
"I have made no secret of my ambition to provide a scheme for arts and culture facilities in line with the Sports Capital Programme. The Arts Capital Investment Fund is a pilot scheme which delivers on the commitment in the Programme for Government. I secured €6m in Budget 2026 for the scheme, which provides capital funding for arts and culture organisations across the country. It will enhance local cultural facilities, improve access and increase participation in arts and culture within our communities."
Minister of State Noel Grealish said: "I firmly believe that art is for everyone, and this Government is committed to improving access to the arts for all. This scheme will strengthen the cultural organisations we love so dearly all across the country, and will ensure that art remains a thriving and vital part of our society."
Under the scheme, grants of up to €100,000 are available for equipment (Category 1) at a 95% grant rate, or 70% where the facility is owned by a Local Authority; up to €200,000 for construction (Category 2) at a 95% rate, or 70% for Local Authority-owned facilities; and up to €15,000 for equipment under Category 3 at a 95% rate. Detailed information, including how to apply, will be available until 18 December 2026 at www.gov.ie/en/department-of-culture-communications-and-sport/publications/creative-arts-grants-and-funding/.
