O’Donovan Launches American Presidents’ Trail And The Presidents’ Paths For America250

National America250 programme to plant commemorative trees and install heritage panels nationwide, launching in Bruff, Co Limerick, alongside a new publication charting centuries of Irish connections to US presidents.

A nationwide initiative linking communities across Ireland with successive Presidents of the United States is being unveiled as part of America250, Ireland’s programme marking 250 years since the signing of the Declaration of Independence.

The American Presidents’ Trail will feature commemorative tree plantings and interpretive panels that showcase the deep ancestral and historical ties between Ireland and a significant number of US Presidents.

The project will be formally launched by the Minister for Culture, Communications and Sport, Patrick O’Donovan T.D., in Bruff, County Limerick, on Saturday, 4 July 2026, the 250th anniversary of American independence. The event will acknowledge President John F. Kennedy’s family connection to the area.

Speaking today, Minister O’Donovan said: "Almost half of all American presidents can trace their roots back to the towns, villages, and communities of Ireland. This project is recognition of that deep, enduring bond, mapping out a unique heritage trail that connects our local communities directly to the history of the White House."

He added: "In particular I would like to commend Deputy Edward Timmins for his commitment to this important commemorative project, his willingness to work with me on this to strengthen the bonds between our two nations and recognise the origins of many American presidents."

The Bruff launch will kick-start a programme of tree planting by local authorities with recognised presidential links later in the year. Permanent information panels, developed with historians, will be installed at participating sites to explain each President’s connection to the locality, creating a lasting resource for residents and visitors.

A community-led model will allow local authorities and groups to celebrate their distinctive ties to the United States in ways that reflect local heritage and traditions throughout the anniversary period.

The American Presidents’ Trail aims to leave a lasting America250 legacy by establishing a permanent network of commemorative locations that highlight Ireland’s contribution to the American story. The initiative will run through 2026 and 2027.

Alongside the trail, Minister O’Donovan, together with Northern Ireland’s Minister for Communities, Gordon Lyons, MLA, announced a new publication, The Presidents’ Paths: Life Stories of Irish America over 300 Years. Produced in collaboration between the Department of Culture, Communications and Sport and the Department for Communities, and written by Dr Angela Byrne, it profiles each US President with ancestral roots on the island of Ireland and serves as a resource for those studying the US Presidency and the wider Irish-American story.

A companion title aimed at younger readers will follow later in the year. Together, the publications are intended to deepen understanding of the many Irish links to the US Presidency across centuries and regions of the island.

Both publications will be made freely available, reflecting the Department’s commemorations principle of accessibility. America250 marks 4 July 1776 and offers an opportunity to reflect on, and celebrate, the cultural, historical, political and familial bonds between Ireland and the United States.
