New Garda Recruitment Drive Opens

Minister for Justice, Home Affairs and Migration, Jim O'Callaghan TD, alongside Garda Commissioner Justin Kelly, has officially launched the latest recruitment campaign for An Garda Síochána. The competition is live as of Monday, 11 May 2026, and will accept applications until 3pm on Wednesday, 3 June 2026.

The campaign emphasises the diverse career trajectories available within the force, ranging from frontline community policing and the Dog Unit to specialised roles in Crimecall and senior management. A unique addition to this year's drive is an appeal for candidates with musical backgrounds, as the Garda Band is seeking new members. Interested applicants will have the opportunity to audition following the completion of their training and probationary period.

Garda trainees benefit from a 36-week program at the Garda College, during which they receive a weekly allowance of €354, with all accommodation and meal costs covered. Upon graduation, members earn a Level 7 Bachelor of Arts in Applied Policing from the University of Limerick. The starting salary for a sworn member is now €39,194, supplemented by allowances for a 12-hour shift roster and overtime opportunities.

Minister for Justice Jim O'Callaghan said: "I very much welcome the launch of the latest Garda recruitment campaign. Recruitment into An Garda Síochána is continuing apace. 201 trainees entered the Garda Training college last week which is the fourth consecutive intake of over 200 trainees. This competition will ensure that there is a strong pipeline of new recruits which will continue to increase the size of the Garda organisation.

"A career in An Garda Síochána is demanding, but it is particularly rewarding as their work is varied, and connects Gardaí to the communities they serve. I am committed to supporting Gardaí, both through the provision of resources and legislative provisions, to ensure that Gardaí on the frontline have the skills and equipment they need."

Current recruitment data shows a trend toward a more diverse and mature workforce. The most recent attestation included 42 members over the age of 30 and several recruits born outside of Ireland, representing countries such as Spain, India, Poland, and the United States.

Garda Commissioner Justin Kelly said: "Being a Garda is a tough job, but I know from personal experience how rewarding it can be. There are not many jobs where you can make a positive difference to people and communities every day. It can also offer career opportunities in varied and interesting roles. As a Garda you can make a significant contribution to public safety through a variety of roles, including community policing, investigating domestic abuse, and tackling organised crime."

Applications are being managed by publicjobs and must be submitted through their official website at www.publicjobs.ie.
