Garda Launch Operation Twin Tracks Day of Engagement

An Garda Síochána has joined forces with Iarnród Éireann, Transdev Ireland, and the National Transport Authority (NTA) for a national day of engagement under Operation Twin Tracks. Taking place today, 6 May 2026, the initiative is part of an ongoing strategy to prevent and detect anti-social behaviour on public transport services across the country.

The operation involves high-visibility patrols on DART, Commuter, and InterCity rail services, as well as the Luas Red and Green lines. The primary objectives of the day are to ensure public safety, protect property, and provide crime prevention advice to passengers. By maintaining a visible presence, the authorities aim to support transport personnel and improve overall rail safety while bringing any offenders to justice.

Chief Superintendent Jane Humphries of the Garda National Community Engagement Bureau commented: "An Garda Síochána, as part of Operation Twin Tracks, encourages and supports this ongoing opportunity to engage positively with the users of public transport, Iarnród Éireann, LUAS and the NTA. This engagement day affords An Garda Síochána the opportunity to maintain a visible presence on board these services while encouraging security and safety on board while preventing and detecting anti-social behaviour."

In addition to patrols, Community Engagement stands have been established at major transport hubs, including Connolly and Heuston stations in Dublin, as well as various regional locations. Local Community Policing members and Crime Prevention Officers are staffing these hubs to offer personal safety guidance to the travelling public.

The operation extends to several key intercity routes nationwide, including:

• The Mayo, Roscommon, and Longford Division, covering stations from Ballyhaunis to Westport and Ballina.

• The Galway Division, including Oranmore, Athenry, and Ballinasloe, as well as southern stops such as Gort.

• The Sligo and Leitrim routes, incorporating Sligo, Boyle, Carrick on Shannon, and Longford.

• The Kildare and Carlow Division, including Newbridge, Athy, and Carlow.

• The Wicklow and Wexford Division, covering stops between Bray and Rosslare.

• The Limerick and Tipperary Divisions, spanning Limerick Junction, Nenagh, Thurles, and Clonmel.

• The Cork divisions, covering routes through Mallow and Rathmore, as well as the local Cobh and Midleton lines.

Mary Considine, Chief Executive of Iarnród Éireann, welcomed the initiative, stating: "The extensive and high profile public engagement through Operation Twin Tracks complements the ongoing, proactive engagement between Iarnród Éireann, An Garda Síochána, the NTA and other public transport operators year-round. Joint proactive patrols, rapid Garda response hubs at twenty locations across the Intercity network, and cooperation on specific event plans nationally and locally demonstrate the partnership between AGS and public transport operators across the country."
