€600,000 Announced For Playground Upgrades And New Play Spaces Nationwide
Minister for Children, Disability and Equality, Norma Foley, has confirmed the 30 recipients of this year's Capital Grant Scheme for Play and Recreation, with a combined €600,000 allocated to councils across the country.
The scheme backs Local Authorities to improve access to high‑quality play and recreation by refurbishing and upgrading existing sites or developing new facilities. Grants are worth up to €22,000 per project, with benefits expected for children and families nationwide.
A strong emphasis this year is on inclusion and universal access. Funded works include, among other measures:
- Wheelchair‑accessible seesaws
- Inclusive sensory playground equipment and inclusive play spaces - Upgraded accessibility features and biodiversity planting
- Level access play equipment
- Teen spaces
Announcing the funding, Minister Foley said: "I am delighted to announce this year's Capital Grants for Play and Recreation, which will provide vital support for communities in developing vibrant, inclusive, and accessible spaces for children and young people. These investments reflect our strong commitment to ensuring that every child has the opportunity to play, explore, and thrive in safe and inspiring environments.
"We look forward to working closely with each local authority to deliver these projects that will enhance wellbeing, promote active lifestyles, and strengthen community connections across the country."

Playgrounds To Become 'Smoke Free'
Future applications for children's recreation and play areas will be subject to a 'no smoking' criterion before they will be considered, the Department for Children and Youth Affairs has said. Children's Minister Dr James Reilly has requested his department to review its funding arrangements to take account of the Tobacco Free Ireland policy.

Fermanagh Firm Builds Irish Fire Station
A border construction project is proving to be a blazing success for a Co Fermanagh firm that has just been appointed as the main contractor for a €3.7 million two-storey fire station in Monaghan Town. To be located at Annahagh, it will also include an access road to serve the six-bay fire station, ancillary spaces and offices.
