Murder Investigation Launched After Man Dies In Newcastle
Detectives have launched a murder investigation following the death of 84-year-old Sean Small in Newcastle.
A report was received at approximately 10.30pm on Sunday, 24 August, that a man had been found dead outside a property in the Slievenabrock Avenue area.
Police cordons remain in place as enquiries are conducted.
Detective Chief Inspector Kerrie Foreman, from the Police Service of Northern Ireland’s Major Investigation Team, said that while enquiries are at an early stage, officers are working at pace. She added: "We understand this news will cause shock and concern within this close-knit community of Newcastle. I encourage people not to speculate and allow our officers the time and space to carry out their investigation."
Chief Inspector Adam Ruston of Newry Mourne and Down said that more officers would be on patrol to provide reassurance to the community. He said police would be "relentless in our pursuit of the perpetrators and in securing justice."
Police have appealed to anyone who may have information, dash-cam, or doorbell footage to contact them on 101, quoting reference number 1746 of 24/08/25. Information can also be submitted online at psni.police.uk/makeareport.
Alternatively, information can be provided anonymously to the charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111 or online at crimestoppers-uk.org.

Father Arrested Following The Deaths Of Two Brothers In Co Mayo
Sanjeev Chada, 42, the father of two brothers Eoghan and Ruairí Chada, has been arrested after being discharged from hospital. He was arrested earlier today in Castlebar and is currently being detained under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act, 1984, at Westport Garda Station.

Fresh Appeal For Information On 1993 Murder Of Brendan McKenna
Detectives from Legacy Investigation Branch have issued a fresh appeal for information on the murder of Brendan McKenna near Comber in June 1993, on what would have been Brendan's 58th birthday. Mr McKenna was shot dead by a gunman as he drove to a quarry on the Ballystockart Road, Comber on 2 June 1993.

Police Renew Appeal For Information In North Cork Murder Investigation
Gardaí investigating the discovery of a man's body in North Cork last weekend said they suspect "foul play". The body of 36-year-old Peter Murphy was found at his rented home outside Mallow on Saturday afternoon. Investigators said he had suffered injuries to his head, and a post-mortem revealed "significant" internal injuries.

Praise For Rescued Pilot
The Air Rescue Department has praised the pilot that survived after ditching his aircraft off the coast of Wexford. Pilot John O’Shaughnessy performed a forced landing near Tuskar Rock lighthouse in Wexford when his two-seater Avid Speedwing suffered a power failure at about 4.45pm on Tuesday.

PSNI Cuts Uproar
An already financially beleaguered police service is facing fresh cutbacks. As a result, the Northern Ireland Policing Board is to challenge the Government over proposed £17m cuts in the police service budget.
