Call For Service To Remind Men To Take Prostate Test
A Fine Gael Senator is calling for wider awareness and a reminder system to be introduced for men to avail of the PSA test, which can be indicative of the early stages of prostate cancer.
Taken through a routine blood test, the Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA) can make all the difference in pre-empting the development of the disease, which will affect 1 in every 7 Irish men at some point in their life.
Dublin Senator Catherine Noone said: "While the PSA test does not offer a direct confirmation of prostate cancer it does prove an effective red flag for investigation which could result in life saving treatment.
"There remains some issues regarding men's comfortability when discussing matters of prostate cancer, I believe a reminder system for men over 50 to have a PSA test, as is done with some other cancer screening tests, can allay some stigma of requesting it.
"Prostate cancer represents the most common cancer for men in Ireland after skin cancer and we must recognise that we can improve our detection rate by breaking stigmas and improving our systems in simple ways.
"While this is not a silver bullet, it is another indicator that we can integrate into our system that has the potential to detect an issue earlier than would otherwise be possible, which as we know, is crucial in fighting cancer."

300,000 Women Benefit From Free Cancer Checks
Free cervical cancer checks in Ireland have helped diagnose over 100 women. More than 300,000 free cervical cancer checks were carried out in Ireland between September 2009 and August 2010. Out of these, 145 women were diagnosed with the disease.

50% Rise In Irish Cancer Cases
The number of cancer cases in Ireland has increased by almost 50% since the mid 90s. Despite this shocking jump in cases it has been stated that the survival rates are also improving. A survey carried out by the National Cancer Registry has revealed these new statistics.
