Sinn Féin TD Sets Out Radical Vision In New Housing Book

Sinn Féin politician Eoin Ó Broin is set to launch a new book on housing today, 08 May.

The party's Housing spokesperson, who already has experience as a published writer, has penned 'HOME: Why Public Housing is the Answer'.

This book sets out a radically different vision to what a functional housing system could look like by prioritising housing as a right and not a commodity.

Speaking ahead of his book launch in Dublin City Centre, Deputy Ó Broin said: "The problem with the provision of good quality, affordable housing in this State go deeper than the current failing policy of Fine Gael and Rebuilding Ireland.

"Since the 1980s, successive governments have pulled back from delivering public housing and left it to the market and the private rented sector to fill the gap.

"We are now living through the consequences of these polices. Social Housing waiting lists are climbing, the private rented sector remains dysfunctional and there is a generation of working people who cannot afford to buy a home in the city that they work in.

"HOME sets out a different vision. If the political will existed affordable, secure homes to rent and to buy could be delivered, the private rented sector could be reformed, and housing inequalities would be tackled."

Irish Defender Paul McShane To Leave Reading

Republic of Ireland defender Paul McShane has announced he will leave Reading this summer after four years with the club.

The Wicklow man has served as captain at the Championship club for four years, joining from Hull City in 2015.

In a social media farewell, McShane said: "I'd like to thank all the fans for their support over the years. My aim when I came here was to get this club back to the Premier League, and I gave everything to achieve that. We came so close in 16/17 but it wasn't to be.

"It was a true honour to be captain for 4 years and I've learned a lot both on and off the pitch. Thank you all for the memories and I wish the club all the success in the future."

This announcement follows the recent retirement of McShane's fellow club and country counterpart John O'Shea.

O'Shea officially hung up his boots following Reading's 0-0 draw with Birmingham on Sunday, 05 May, after an illustrious career winning Champions League and Premier League titles with Manchester United.
