Plastic To Be Removed From Guinness Packaging

The maker of Guinness has announced plans to remove plastic from its beer packaging.

Diageo will no longer use ring carriers for cans and will also cease the use of shrink wraps for multipacks, in the changes to be brought in across Ireland this August.

100% recyclable and biodegradable cardboard will replace the plastic in the €18.5 million investment.

The new packaging will be rolled out across the UK and other international markets in 2020, and the initiative will also apply to Diageo's Harp, Rockshore and Smithwick brands.

The firm's bottling and packaging plant in Belfast will be the first site up and running with the new packs and the change is expected to reduce the overalll plastic usage by 400 tonnes annually.

Call For Immediate Action On Wasteful Food Packaging
Fine Gael has called for immediate action to reduce the packaging on everyday products. Ireland South MEP Deirdre Clune made the call ahead of a European Parliament vote on packaging and waste. MEP Clune said that more action was needed on excessive and wasteful packaging.
