Ireland's Solidarity On The 25th Commemoration Of The Rwanda Genocide
Tánaiste Simon Coveney has issued a message of solidarity to the people of Rwanda on the 25th Commemoration of the Genocide.
The 100 days of slaughter in 1994 claimed the lives of over 800,000 people, when ethnic Hutu extremists targeted members of the minority Tutsi community.
Marking 25 years since the "horrific event", the Tánaiste said: "Today, Ireland joins with Rwanda to honour the memory of the victims and express solidarity with the survivors of the Rwanda genocide, their children and all Rwandans.
"On this solemn occasion, #Kwibuka25 reminds us of the consequences of hate speech and division based on ethnicity. It is a reminder of the responsibility of the international community to protect all peoples from genocide and crimes against humanity."
